Hello,

The second half of 2010 was less productive with regard to my art then I had anticipated or planned for. It turned out to be a very difficult year for my family as two tragedies fell upon us. Sadly, my wife, Jennifer, lost both of her parents over the course of the year, one right after the other. Everyone in the family made adjustments to help Jennifer care for them during their illness and time of need, which included her spending months away from home. But, it has passed and life is now slowly returning to normal.

Despite the tragedies that befell us, I was able to accomplish a few things in 2010. I compiled a landscape oil painting presentation that consists of 140 slides, pictures and animations, describing my painting process from conception through exhibition and the final sale. I gave the presentation on May 11, 2010 to an audience of approximately 15 members of the Cheshire Art League.

I sold a painting at a Salmagundi sponsored auction in March! I exhibited artwork in two events sponsored by the Cheshire Art League: The 2010 Annual Exhibition and 2010 Fall Art Show and Sale, where I sold several of my reproductions. In Late 2010, I was approached by Jane White, who represents the Mill House Gallery in Chester, Connecticut. I was extended the opportunity to hold my own solo exhibition at the gallery during the month of April, 2011. Of course... I accepted!

Other developments: I revamped my home studio and gallery this past year to make them more functional (and cozy). I have several LARGE paintings that I hope to complete by March or April. Some goals for 2011 are to exhibit with the Salmagundi Club, Lyme Art Association, and to have a painting accepted into one of the Oil Painters of America exhibits. As for the rest of 2011, I am keeping things open and I will see were my art brings me.

Cheshire Art League
'Landscape Oil Painting Presentation'
by: John O'Keefe

I was approached by the Cheshire Art League late in 2009 and asked if I would give a presentation on my painting process and techniques. I accepted the invitation and began working on a presentation right away.

Preparing for the presentation was very enlightening to me. The time I spent reviewing and meditating on my methods and techniques really helped me to grow in appreciation for how I work. The presentation also helped me to make progress toward another goal that I have, of one day recording and producing my own series of landscape oil painting "how to" videos and DVD's.

The slide show presentation took about 1-1/2 hours to give, which included open discussion, questions, and answers. In addition I brought several completed and in-progress paintings. This gave C.A.L. members the opportunity to examine examples of my work first hand. I discussed and answered many more questions about my artwork and techniques after I had concluded the slide show presentation.

Here is the second video (part 2 of 2) that documents my first Salmagundi auction. The Auction was held on March 18th, 2010. I sold my painting entitled, "The Road Home". The auctioneer for the event was Del-Bouree Bach, a well known artist in the New England area. Other artists that I met at the auction were Helen Dayton and Charles Bierman.
