"Passage of Time"
(Oil Painting #11)
I wanted to do a classical painting. A common theme in many old victorian paintings is to have ancient ruins that are overgrown
my modern plants, schrubbs, and trees. To make the painting more interesting I wanted the weather to be gloomy. I found a nice
reference photograph on the internet of a massive storm cloud. Next I researched through my old antique magazines and journals from
the late 1800's and found a nice engraving of a Roman ruin. I also have a book of victorian engravings of the plant kingdom and from
there is where I found the tropical plants and tree that will make up the foreground. In this small animated gif you can see the
scene come together as I overlaid each piece to make up the final composition.

Here is a nice closeup of the final scene. I intend to paint this in black and white only.

DAYS 1-3
Days 1-3 notes...
Clouds!!!! Wow these proved to be tough. I did not refresh my pallet and by day 3 the paint was not going on smooth. Blending was almost nonexistent. The edges were rough and I was not pleased. Notice the hard lines in the darkest part of the clouds.

DAY 4
Day 4 notes...
I laid out fresh paint on my pallet and started reworking the clouds. You can see how improved they became - nice soft blends between light and dark areas.

DAY 5
Day 5 notes...
Clouds are done! I started blocking in the distant land forms. You can notice where I placed some vertical markers where the columns of the ruins will start being placed.

DAY 6
Day 6 notes...
I laid down a light grey base along the entire bottom and started adding more ruin details. Because of the small size of these details it was taking a very long time to paint. I was very careful not to rush because I wanted my lines to be perfect.

DAYS 7 & 8
Days 7 & 8 notes...
Now I started adding features from the left side of the painting. I intend to work from farthest left to nearest right... ending with the big tree and orchids.
